George Méliès
George Méliès was a french film maker who was very influential and revolutionary in early cinematography because of his use of special effects. He directed over 500 films in his lifetime. One of the films that is he best known for is Le Voyage Dans le Lune, or A Trip to the Moon which was a black and white film made in 1902 and deemed the first science fiction movie ever made. By accident he discovered the "stop trick", which allowed things to seem like they disappear/appear/change in the scene. This happened by stopping the camera, moving things around, and starting it up again.
I remember watching the film in class and being amused by all the odd things that were going on. I had never heard of George Méliès or A Trip to the Moon before this class, and had no idea that such early films had special effects like that. I thought it was amusing and clever, especially when he made the umbrella turn into a mushroom.
